CUOTC
WO1 (RSM) David Bagnall Regimental Sergeant Major
Having passed out of
the Infantry Training Centre (ITC) in December 1999 and joined the
1st Battalion the
Duke of Wellingtons
Regiment. During my
first assignment, the
Battalion were on public
duties in London. Shortly
after my arrival the
Battalion then moved
to Germany as part of
the arms plot to take a
new role in Armoured
Infantry (AI). In Germany,
I attended a Battalion
run Potential Junior Non
Commissioned Officer
(JNCO), from which i
was promoted to Lance
Corporal. Whilst in
Germany I deployed
to Kosovo as a team
commander. I then
deployed to Iraq on OP TELIC as a dismounted 2IC. On my return from Iraq attended the Section Commanders Battle Course (SCBC) and then returned to the Battalion
as a Section Commander.
Once I’d completed 2 years
being a Section Commander I
was posted to ITC as a Section
Commander instructor and held
this post for 2 years. On my return
from ITC I then went onto the
Platoon Sergeants Battle Course
where I achieved a Distinction and was awarded Top Student. It was time to go back to the Battalion to do my dream job where I was given my first Platoon which he had for 2 Years and thoroughly enjoyed. My next calling was to head up the 1* Close Protection Team in Iraq on TELIC 14 where I had the job of providing CP team for a POLAD in theatre.
On my return I joined up with the Kings Division Training Team (KDTT) in Catterick where I held the
post of instructor Platoon Sergeant for 9 months; where I instructed JNCOs to attend both Junior and Senior Brecon courses.
After a short spell in Catterick I attended the RMAS instructor’s cadre and was successful.
Whilst at RMAS his highest accolade was his Platoon winning the Sovereigns Banner Competition for being the best Platoon at Sandhurst at that time.
After RMAS I deployed to Afghanistan on HERRICK 16 with the Battalion as the Battle Captain 2IC amongst other job roles. I then held the post of Rifle Company CQMS in Battalion for 2 years and then went onto be CSM of an AI Company
in the Lead Armoured Battle group on Salisbury Plain.
My most recent deployment was to Kabul, as the RQMS G4 Mentor at the
Afghan National Army Officer Academy (ANAOA) for 10 months.
I then then most recently promoted to WO1 and assumed the duties as RSM Cambridge UOTC in April 17. Cambridge and the surrounding areas are
such an exciting place; with so much to offer both the staff and OCdts at the OTC. From the local training areas; ranges fitness facilities and not forgetting the sociable aspect that both the OTC and Cambridge have to offer us all.
With lots of exciting Exercises; Expeditions; Leadership & Development opportunities on the horizon, I’m very much looking forward to the next 2 years.
