teams in the group stage. Whilst being the secondary competition of the tournament it did not constitute a stroll in the park. Some challenging teams would have to be defeated should the B team want to lift some silverware – bear in mind that Wyton’s best previous result was the Semi-Final of the Plate.
With yet another keeper change, this time with SAC Beasley wearing the gloves, the B team kicked off their last-16 match against Lossie B who had previously been swept 6-0 by the A’s in their opening game of the group stage. The B team found Lossie a much more challenging team than their counterparts. That said, goals from SAC Driver and a first of the tournament for SAC Brandon Leir saw the B’s run out 2-1 victors. The belief and determination really stepped up a level after this victory which pushed the B’s to a slim 3-2 victory over Marham B with SAC’s Driver and Leir once against getting their name on the scoresheet, the third being provided by SAC Ben Richards.
The semi-final against Brize Norton B saw Wyton B produce by far their best performance of the tournament. Beasley had by this point already established himself as the first-choice keeper but took it up another level by producing some tournament-best saves to restrict Brize B to only a singular goal. The B’s attacking display was also something to admire with Kuwan scoring not only his first goal of the tournament but a hat-trick of them! SAC Leir complimented the score line by scoring another two goals and doubling his tournament tally.
With their confidence up following their best performance in the tournament hopes were high that the B team would emergence victorious in the final against Boulmer. With any football competition of any standard, heartache is just around the corner, waiting for the right time to pounce. Unfortunately for the B team it waited until the final possible game to reveal itself. The B team once again
put in a good display but could not match the performance of their opposition and despite their best efforts Boulmer emerged victorious with a 3-1 win. It was a tough loss for the B team players but one they should be proud of. It would have been easy for them to give up following the group stage and turn up for their last-16 match with little care for the result, knock off early and enjoy the rest of the afternoon – after all they weren’t participating in the Cup and there were rumours the bar would open soon. They didn’t give up though and were rewarded with a hard-earned runners-up medal and no doubt a much more satisfying pint.
Meanwhile, the Cup was being played with the winner being crowned champions of the entire tournament. After their unbeaten run in the group stage the A’s started their Last- 16 tie full of confidence and by the time the whistle was blown they were full of belief
that this was the year. Four goals from WO Thomson, a brace from LCpl Males and one from SAC Turner saw Wyton A cruise based Scampton 7-2. The quarter-final looked at least on paper a tough fixture against Waddington A. However, a second clean sheet of the tournament for SSgt Vasper and another brace from SAC Benham helped the team to a 4-0 score line and without ever having to reach top gear arguably their most dominant victory of the tournament.
With two games standing in the way of being crowned champions, Wyton A found themselves against local rivals Wittering in the semi-final. Wyton started strong as they had all tournament but found themselves against a team who were also proving why they deserved a place in the final four. After a few minutes of stalemate, it was the opposition which scored the first goal. Wyton A nonetheless carried on as normal and
