whilst having excellent spells of attack found themselves against the toughest keeper they’d faced thus far. It was evident they would have to score a wonder goal past the opposition. Towards the end of the game LCpl Males picked the ball up from deep and with a swift touch to his right smashed the ball with all the vigour of a heavy-weight boxer throwing a knockout punch. The eyes of the crowd followed the ball as it crashed off the crossbar down into the ground before their attention switched to the man with the whistle. The referee with a shrug of his shoulders and much do the disbelief of all present waved not only play on but with effect ended Wyton A’s chances of appearing in the final. Sensing the let off, Wittering focused their attention on defending their slender lead and despite the continued efforts of the Wyton players they could not find an equaliser. The final whistle brought the A’s tournament to an end in a
disappointing and painful fashion leaving all players asking what if?
With comparisons to Lampard versus Germany quickly made and with many of the teams already departed it was time for the B team to receive their runners-up trophy. Whilst the tournament should only be considered outstanding for everyone involved the post-tournament pints and clashing of egos meant the debate over who was the better team raged. So as a cool layer of late afternoon mist rested just above the turf, the most important game of the day commenced. The B team, high in confidence and hyped up by SAC Ellis started the game with something to prove. However, their confidence did not translate into an equal performance. The B team, likely fatigued by their extra game, could not prevent their opponents from scoring four goals with two from SAC Turner and two from WO Thomson. SAC Liam Parker also made his tournament debut in goal for the A’s and to the surprise of many but not to himself made some impressive saves and kept a clean sheet.

come but the one thing that can be agreed on is that the Festival of Football was undoubtedly an overwhelming accomplishment for RAF Wyton. For Wyton FC to have both their teams reach two semi-finals is a huge achievement. To have the A team be one of the standout teams of the tournament and to witness the B team overcome a poor group stage and power their way through to the Plate Final is something to admire and marvel at. The tournament not only brought the team closer together but proved the capability of Wyton FC who will use the confidence and morale gained in the remaining of their season to push on for promotion. For now, a well- deserved team-bonding night in the heart of Birmingham awaited the team.
