CASTLEFORD
CADETS TAKE
TO THE SKIES
IN AN RAF
GROB TUTOR!
By Flight Lieutenant Victoria Williamson
Three cadets from 2388 (Castleford) Squadron
recently soared into the skies, flying in an RAF Grob
Tutor at RAF Leeming. Cadets Harry De-whytell,
Louis Wheelhouse, and Bobby Birtwhistle had the
opportunity to pilot the aircraft alongside qualified
RAF instructors.
On a crisp and clear day, they took to the skies
above North Yorkshire, each completing a sortie in
the Grob Tutor T1, a single-engine aircraft renowned
for its agility and manoeuvrability. The air experience
flights are designed to give cadets hands-on
experience of flying while introducing them to basic
airmanship and aviation concepts.
The Grob Tutor T1 is a modern, light aircraft
used by the RAF for elementary flying training. Its
responsive controls and handling characteristics
make it ideal for teaching the fundamentals of flight.
For these cadets, the experience was not only an
adventure but also a practical insight into the world
of aviation.
The day was supported by RAF Leeming personnel
and instructors who guided the cadets through a
comprehensive pre-flight briefing, including safety
protocols and an overview of the Grob Tutor’s
features. Once airborne, the cadets were able to
take the controls and practice manoeuvres under the

Flight Lieutenant Victoria Williamson, Officer
Commanding, 2388 (Castleford) Squadron,
commented on the experience: “Opportunities like
these are what make the RAF Air Cadets so special.
Flying in a Grob Tutor is not just about learning to
pilot an aircraft; it’s about inspiring young people,
building confidence, and showing them that the
sky really is the limit. I am incredibly proud of our
cadets for embracing this opportunity with such
enthusiasm.”
