HALIFAX CADETS SOAR TO SUCCESS
IN NATIONAL STEM CHALLENGE
250 (Halifax) Squadron Air Cadets proudly took
part in the prestigious National Final of the 2024
RTX Quadcopter Challenge, held at the historic RAF
Museum, Cosford. The talented team, self-styled as
the "Quadcopter Commanders," comprised Cadets
Toby Baker, Kamran Butt, Eleanor Rennie, Jenson
Reynolds, and William Simpson. Their outstanding
efforts secured them a remarkable 13th place
overall, standing tall among 170 participating teams
from across the UK.
The journey began in April when Pilot Officer
Abi Langton sought a dynamic STEM (Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)
challenge that would inspire the cadets. The RTX
Quadcopter Challenge proved an ideal fit, integrating
the core themes of Air, Space, and Cyber into a
thrilling national competition.
The competition unfolded in four stages. During
Stage 1, the cadets conceptualised an Extreme
Location for their quadcopter to operate in and
unanimously chose the vast frontier of Space.
They envisioned a unique design tailored to this
demanding environment.
Stage 2 saw the team take part in the "Build &
Fly" event, marking their first hands-on experience
with quadcopter assembly and flight. The cadets
displayed exceptional teamwork and technical skill
as they constructed their quadcopter from scratch
and tested its capabilities.
In Stage 3, the Regional Final, the team enhanced
their quadcopter with modifications increasing its
functionality. Their meticulous preparation paid off
as they presented their concept and navigated a
challenging obstacle course with precision. Their
performance earned them the top spot, propelling
them to the National Final.
The National Final was the ultimate test of their
capabilities. The cadets showcased their innovative
ideas during an interview beneath the imposing
rotors of a Chinook helicopter. Their flying skills
were then put to the test on an obstacle course that
demanded precision and agility, navigating through
hoops, boxes, and other obstacles. In their final
presentation, the cadets impressed judges with their
professionalism, creativity, and depth of knowledge.
Though they narrowly missed a podium finish, the
"Quadcopter Commanders" secured a commendable
8th place in the presentation category and were
recognised with medals and a trophy for their
Regional Final triumph. The team’s ranking among
the top 13 teams in the nation is a testament to their
commitment and ingenuity.
The event also provided invaluable opportunities
for the cadets to engage with industry professionals
and explore hands-on STEM activities, broadening
their horizons.
Wing Commander Katherine Barton, Officer
Commanding South and West Yorkshire Wing,
expressed her pride in the cadets’ achievements,
saying, “This outstanding result is a testament to
the hard work, creativity, and teamwork displayed
by 250 (Halifax) Squadron. They have set a shining
example of how STEM initiatives can inspire the next
generation of Air Cadets in aviation themed activities.
From designing and building to fine-tuning their
quadcopter, they demonstrated attention to detail
and engineering capability. These are precisely the
kinds of hands-on experiences that bring aviation
and engineering to life for our cadets. They should be
immensely proud of what they've accomplished – a
big well done!”
A special mention goes to Pilot Officer Langton
for her support and guidance, together with Sqn Ldr
Andy Emms, Fg Off Will Ainslie, Sgt Rob Harrison,
and Sgt Caitlin Mitchell for their contributions in
supporting the Cadets. Reflecting on the experience,
Pilot Officer Langton said, “This challenge has been
an incredible journey for our cadets, showcasing
their potential and determination. We are excited to
build on this success and return stronger in 2025!”
