HARRINGTON Harold Pte of Derby died on 21 October 2010 aged 90. He joined the Carrier Platoon 2/5th Battalion The Sherwood Foresters in Tunisia in 1943 and then served with them at the Salerno Landings and Gothic Line - Italy, the
Middle East, Greece and also Austria before transferring to the 2nd Battalion The Loyals. After demobilization he worked for Wilkinsons Coach Builders and then Auto Windscreens, both in Derby.
HARRIS Graham ‘Mike’ Pte of Worcester died on 1 January 2011 aged 73. As a National Serviceman he joined the 1st Battalion The Worcestershire Regiment in July 1959 and served in Jamaica as an anti-tank gunner. He was
discharged in 1961 and returned to his pre NS occupation as a coach builder for Carmichaels, Worcester He later was employed as a welder.
HARRIS Ronald ‘Ron’ LCpl of Kidderminster died on 29 July 2011 aged 79. Ron joined the 1st Battalion The Worcestershire Regiment as a National Serviceman and served in Malaya before leaving the Regiment in 1953, he
then returned to his pre-service job as a weaver for the carpet manufacturer Brintons Ltd of Kidderminster. Having reached the position of Supervisor he retired from the company aged 64 after fifty years service. Ron became a Trustee of the Kidderminster War Memorials Trust and was also Branch Secretary of the WFRA Kidderminster Branch in 1998. His much valued service to the Association was recognized in 2010 with him being presented with a Merit Award at the AGM. Ron was also a most knowledgeable and much valued WFA Association Committee member.
HIGTON Harry Sgt of Eastwood, Nottinghamshire on 02 January 2011 aged 91. He served with the 1/5th Battalion The Sherwood Foresters and in 1940 he joined the 2/5th in France and it was whilst being evacuated in Operation
Ariel on board the RMS Lancastria, that he jumped overboard when the ship was bombed by German aircraft and began to sink. After spending two hours in the water he was picked up by a Frenchman in a
rowing boat. On return to UK he was then seconded to the Battle School, Liverpool and as an Instructor he was accidentially shot in the arm by one of his pupils, whilst on the ranges. Harry served in A and B Coys and was taken POW at Sejanean, Tunisia. He was moved between several camps in Italy and Germany and was finally interned in Stalag 357 at Oerbke, Nr Fallingbostel. During his time as POW Harry kept a diary which he presented to the Imperial War Museum. On repatriation he returned to Nottinghamshire and found employment with the Co-op as a radio and television engineer.
HILL Reginald John Reginald Hill from Wombourne, died on 21st November 2010. He served in 1st Battalion, The Staffordshire Regiment from 1960 – 69. He was a member of Lichfield Branch of the Regimental Association.
HILL Richard Kenneth TD Maj of Peterborough, Cambridgeshire died in June 2009. He served with the 8th Battalion
The Sherwood Foresters between 1959-61 before moving to the 5th/8th Battalion in 1961 and served until 1964. He joined the Northamptonshire Regiment in 1964-67 and moved to the 5th Battalion Royal Anglian Regiment in 1967, retiring from the Army in 1972.
HOLMES Danny Danny Holmes passed away on 9th September 2011. He served
in 1st Battalion, The South Staffordshire Regiment,between 1952 – 55, as a member of Support Company. He was also a member of Walsall & Bloxwich Branch of the Staffordshire Regimental Association. His funeral was held at Streetly Cematorium on the 20th September 2011.
HOPPS Henry Cpl of Radford, Nottingham died on 14 October 2010 aged 69. He enlisted into the 1st Battalion The Sherwood Foresters in May 1959 and served with B Coy in Malaya, Singapore and Cyprus. In 1966 he moved to
Germany and also served in Northern Ireland and Colchester. He left the Army in 1978 and joined the family run glazing business, later taking up employment as a school caretaker and a taxi driver.
HUMPHREY John ‘Jack’ LSgt of Sawley, Derbyshire died on 20 February 2011 aged 87. He joined the 70th Young Soldiers Battalion The Sherwood Foresters in September 1941 and was then posted to the 16th Battalion at
Yarmouth where he remained until it was re-designated as the 1st Battalion in 1943. He was deployed as an Instructor to the
Green Howards and moved to Belgium with them in 1944.
He the returned to the 1st Battalion The Sherwood Foresters at Canterbury and moved with them to Germany after which he was then posted back to Lincoln No 7 ITC as an Instructor.
He was discharged in October 1946. He then took up employment with Boots the Chemist as Project/Design Engineer where he worked until retirement. He then spent much of his time travelling.
JACKSON Alan Pte
of Bilborough, Nottingham died on
8 June 2011 aged
72. He joined the 1st Battalion The Sherwood Foresters as a National Serviceman and served in Singapore and Malaya with C Coy and in the
Battalion Orderly Room. Demobilised in September 1960 he later re-enlisted into the 1st Battalion The Staffordshire Regiment serving in Cyprus, Berlin, Bahrain and Northern Ireland.
JAMES Henry Herbert Humphrey Maj of Woking, Surrey died on 2 July 2011 aged 96. He joined the 1st Battalion The Worcestershire Regiment in 1940 and served in Iceland and North West Europe during the war. In 1943 he
became Platoon Commander 13 Platoon C Company and was then posted shortly before D Day as Platoon Commander 214 Brigade Defence Platoon. He was evacuated to UK in 1944 suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg received during the crossing of the River Seine at the Battle of Vernon. After recuperation he was promoted to Captain and rejoined the 1st Battalion in Germany posted to C Company as Second in Command. In 1949 he was appointed to a Staff position in Hamburg and then was posted the following year to UK as Adjutant 7th Battalion The Worcestershire Regiment. In 1951 he was promoted to Major and in 1953 appointed GSO at HQ 159 Brigade later being posted back to 1st Battalion The Worcestershire Regiment as Company Commander B Company. The following year he was posted to the Malay Regiment before taking up a tour on the War Office Selection Board. In 1955 he rejoined the 1st Battalion Worcestershire Regiment as Company Commander B Company and took command of HQ Company. The following year he took up the post of PRI 1st Battalion and also commanded the Saddle Club and enjoyed playing polo in the regimental team. He retired from the Army in February 1958 and took up employment in the meat trade.
