RUGBY
Army vs Navy
30 April 2016
Major Dom Shaw RADC
The annual Army versus Navy rugby match is an amazing spectacle to be involved
in. Twickenham is sold out and the game is broadcast live on television. It is an opportunity to express yourself on the
eld and for some to be recognised as a sportsman with the talent to play at the highest level of the professional game.
It all starts the day before as the squad arrives at English Rugby Headquarters. The Friday before the game is lled with a familiarisation visit of the changing rooms and the stadium. Kickers are afforded the opportunity to ‘zero’ whilst the rest of the team soaks up the atmosphere and the gravitas of what awaits them the next day. The event culminates in a squad photo on the pitch.
It was a great honor to be invited to the unveiling of the Rose and Poppy Gates in the afternoon. There had never before been a memorial to remember England’s rugby players who made the ultimate sacri ce and gave their lives for their country. A poignant service was held at the gates with members of the Armed Forces, RFU and general public all in attendance. A memory not to be forgotten.
The Army Senior XV Squad and Support Staff along with close family all stay at
the Marriot Hotel in the South Stand. It
is fantastic to stay so close and feel the atmosphere grow as you draw closer to kick off. In the evening before the game there is a meal provided in the hotel before the shirt
