AMS Athletics Championship – RADC Athletics Team
Maj Sarah Armstrong
Many thanks go to our band of valiant volunteers who formed the 9 strong RADC Athletics Team who competed at the AMS Athletics Championships in June 2016. The event took place at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and is the premier AMS inter-unit sporting event of the year.
Although the smallest team in the eld by a margin, we certainly made up for it with our passion and enthusiasm, with the RADC ag ying high throughout the day! The team displayed an excellent performance and attitude throughout the event, with our ladies team nishing an impressive 8th out of 14. An outstanding achievement, given
quality of the eld and the relative size of
our team compared to other units competing.

our lone RADC
representative. However the team manager did take pity on him and decided to spare him from racing the 4 x 400m relay as a solo effort!

tackled the men’s event in strong form, particularly given there were only minutes to spare between that and his 800m nal! SSgt Leon and WO2 Blackwood raced the ladies event, with WO2 Blackwood storming to a 2nd place podium nish in the Vet category.
Normally a long distance runner, Maj Armstrong took on the shorter middle distance events of the 800m and 1500m in attempt to spread the team points and managed to scrape a 2nd place and 3rd place in the 800m and 1500m respectively.
Sprints and jumps were tackled by a very enthusiastic band of RADC athletes, with LCpl Hull, LCpl Bryan and SSgt Humphries keen
to test themselves at a variety of disciplines demonstrating their explosive speed and power. Their willingness to volunteer was duly noted, particularly given the often technical nature of the events in question.
Cpl Venter and LCpl Aderi-Igbekoyi shone in the throwing events, completely blowing the opposition out of the water with their superior skill. LCpl Aderi-Igbekoyi won the team’s only gold medal of the day taking 1st place in the Discus, with Cpl Venter close behind in the bronze position.
