NEDDA
Our 44th D.A. Show was held on Sunday 3rd September. The number of exhibitors and exhibits were comparable to the previous year’s show and the quality of the exhibits was again top-notch stuff and considering the exceptional hot days and prolonged dry spells (typical gardener, always has to mention or moan about the weather).
NEDDA would like to pass on their thanks and appreciation to both judges; Malcolm Evans & David Allison for their contributions which helped make the show a great success.
Northern Branch President Mr Malcom Evans is pictured presenting the NVS Silver Medal to Jeff Parsons for his excellent collection of 5 x 2’s and Ian Brown receiving the Bill Taylor Trophy for his 5 x 250g onions.
etc. and particularly to the most important ones; the wives and partners for providing the buffet and refreshments.
Looking forward:
The D.A. will continue to hold their meetings at Pleasley Miners Welfare on the 3rd Wednesday of the month.
Our 2024 season will kick off with the A.G.M. on Wednesday 21st February.
Instead of meeting every month, again we’ve decided not to hold a meeting
in June, July, August. September and December (we don’t hold meetings in September & December anyway). A list of speakers and events for 2024 will be advertised when available in the Simply Veg magazine, NVS website and other social media.
North Yorkshire & South Durham
The DA completes its active year in October, culminating with the Giant Marrow Competition on the 26th October. The
DA then takes a break until the AGM on Wednesday 31st January 2024.
Attendance at the 2023 meetings has been excellent with some highlights,
being the Potato Competition hand-out
we always get great turnouts to pick up a potato and then also the August meeting for the ceremony of tipping out the bags and seeing what everyone has grown. Also the mini show was an excellent display,
the quality was second to none, although we are struggling to get the newer less experienced members to bench, it is a great opportunity to show off what members have grown and whether they could stand scrutiny at the bigger shows. The regular Stalwarts continue to compete, and they do put some quality exhibits on the bench. This year we handed out sweet pepper
and chilli plants early in the season to encourage everyone to put something on the bench but to be honest the take up was disappointing.
There are no speakers booked yet for the 2024 season and it’s a constant challenge to improve on previous years speakers, we are trying to maintain the balance between growing and showing but I feel most new people are more interested in the ‘Growing,’ so it’s a bit of a balancing act. Hopefully we should have a full schedule of events by the time of the AGM, and this will be published on the NVS website.

Northern Branch
Within the Northern Branch our supply of judges has diminished somewhat. We also have not had a Judges exam within the Branch for
a number of years. It is therefore the intention of the Northern Branch Committee is to hold a judges exam in 2024. To achieve this, we are looking at the possibility of running
a workshop for those who are interested in taking the exam. The workshop could also accommodate those who don’t feel they are quite ready to take the exam but would like to know a little more about judging before committing to the exam.
Anyone within the Northern Branch who wishes to take the
exam, or anyone wishing to attend a discovery workshop please pass your details to Northern Branch Secretary Geoff Wilson FNVS using the following e-mail: geoffwilson100@ gmail.com
