one else. Over the day we each did ve relatively easy climbs.
Monday – Flush with success from the rst day, we headed to a different location with slightly more dif cult climbs. Baz was now comfort- able with our techniques and let us crack on straightaway. We found a ‘5’ dif culty climb, which the entire group struggled to complete. To make ourselves feel better we nished with an easier ‘3+’ climb to ensure no broken egos. As we had come to expect, the skies were clear, the sun was shining and the temperature was a perfect 20 degrees. Unfortunately, OCdt Church, not blessed with the ability to tan, ended up a striking shade of red by the end of the day. The view from this rock face was especially beautiful; we could see for miles around us and the stark contrast between the at land and the hills and mountains shooting out still sticks in my mind.

By this time, it had begun to drizzle lightly. Baz told us if the rain got any worse we would be unable to climb. The temptation of a coffee to wait for the rain to stop was resisted and we found the rock face without any dramas. Luckily the rain stopped quickly and at the end of the day we all attempted to have a go at ‘lead climbing’ where we would put clips going up the rock face in ourselves. Having not practiced this before, we were also safely attached to a billeted rope – I am not sure that I trust myself to lead a climb properly yet! Everyone had a go lead climbing and tying new knots so we all felt we had another successful day of progressing in our technique as well as our climbing ability.
Wednesday – If we thought yesterday had been rainy for Spain, then we were shocked when we woke up to rain from the start. The team’s spirits were dampened by the thought that the Costa Blanca felt a bit too much like Brecon for our liking. Nevertheless, we set off towards Benidorm to nd a rock face close by to climb. When we arrived the wind was strong but luck- ily the rain had died down. Despite suggestions that it might be a better idea to go and nd a
