Exercise TRANSYLVANIAN CADET
On 13 August, ve Of cer Cadets and one instructor departed from RMAS for Bucha- rest with the Făgăraș ridgeline of the
Southern Carpathians very much in our cross hairs. The idea was simple; traversing the moun- tain range from east to west, camping where we could in high Romanian alpine meadows, carry- ing all our kit and rations for the week.
With Sovereign’s Parade complete and the end of term close down over, we took a late after- noon ight to Bucharest, staying there for the evening before organising ourselves the next morning and catching a train to Brasov, the last outpost before Transylvania and outdoors Mecca of Romania. An hour in a rural Romanian taxi later and we were at our drop-off point called Rudarita, a large unoccupied house deep in the Romanian forests. This was where the expedition really began and our next three hours of vertical climbing, before breaking through the treeline, were spent in fear of the Romanian brown bear as OCdt Hunt revealed he had a pot of honey in his backpack.

This early hard work was rewarded in spades as bursting out of the treeline we were greeted by a stunning view over the Southern Carpathians as far as the eye could see, just as the sun was set- ting. This dramatic and picturesque scenery was to become something of a common theme over the next seven days, something that we were perhaps guilty of taking for granted at times! We settled down for the night and constructed our ponchos, whilst getting our dehydrated rations
