Duke of Edinburgh Award
Participation in the Duke of Edinburgh Award is growing in strength. To celebrate this an awards presentation evening was held on Thursday 26 January at Headquarters in Wake eld. Family and friends gathered to proudly watch as the Mayor of Wake eld, Councillor Harry Ellis presented Silver and Bronze certi cates to 12 cadets. The Mayor of Wake eld said, “I feel honoured to be invited to attend such a special occasion and I wish all the cadets well in their future endeavours”. All the cadets had already enrolled on Silver and were preparing for their forthcoming expeditions to Silverwood Camp in Barnsley along with 50 other cadets from the Company.
Great Support for Armed Forces Day
Cadets from Fitzwilliam, South Elmsall, and Ponte- fract Detachments, and The Minden Bugle and Drums along with E Company Cadet Force Adult Volunteers supported the Armed Forces Day event at Pontefract Park, which was organised by our CAA Capt Graham Wood on a scorching hot day. The crowds were entertained with a marching musical display in the arena by the Minden Bugle and Drums, for the rst time without any assistance from the adults.
The cadets took part in a parade in the arena
which was one of the highlights of the day. Manning the climbing tower were adult volunteers Sjt Donna Strudley, Sjt Michael O’Connor and Sjt Stuart Wilson who really had their work cut out as it was such a popular activity they hardly had time for a break.
A week later, on another hot weekend, Batley Detachment cadets acted as ball boys and girls when the Army Ladies Rugby League team challenged Batley Bulldog Ladies to a match in support of Armed Forces Day. The game, which took place at the home of Batley Bulldogs, was a thriller, ending in a great win for the Army Ladies.
A Busy Time for Minden Bugle and Drums
The Band is growing in strength and this is due to all the hard work and commitment from CSjt Tash Mitchell, Sjt Craig Rosser, Civilian Assistant Kev Fawcett, and not forgetting of course all our cadets. Thanks to a grant of £1000 from the West Riding Freemasons Charitable Trust the Band is now in a position to purchase new equipment which will help improve the quality of their performances and displays. In November they supported Pontefract in the Remembrance Sunday parade. In April, they attended the National Band Camp at Altcar where they enjoyed participating in learning and practical sessions. They have recently taken part in the Ri es Retreat Parade at Pontefract together with the Ri es Band and the Freedom of Dewsbury Parade. To round off a busy spring they took part in a musical workshop held at Manygates Education Centre with the Band of The Ri es. The workshop ended with a concert which was attended by family and friends. The cadets thoroughly enjoyed the experience of working alongside and learning from the Band of The Ri es.
E Company Cadets win regional Drill Competition
14 Cadets from 7 detachments, were selected to represent E Company in the Annual Yorkshire North & West ACF Drill Competition. They trained on parade nights and weekends under the guidance of SI Rebecca Brownlie. The competition takes place in heats during Company training weekends held at Strensall Cadet Training Centre. E Company’s turn to be examined took place on Sunday the 15 January. Judging the competition was Yorkshire North & West ACF RSMI Butler and the Deputy Commandant West Lt Col Wootton. Over the course of the following weekends the other four companies were examined and graded. The results were announced in June and E Company was crowned the Yorkshire North & West ACF champions.
The E Company Drill Team consisted of: Cpl Goode (Batley), Cpl Yates (Normanton), Cdt Talat (Wake eld), Cdt Stannard (Fitzwilliam), Cpl Eyre (Wake eld), Sjt Lomas (South Elmsall), Sjt Bruce (Wake eld), L/Cpl Wilson (Ossett), Cpl Leigh (Fitzwilliam), Cdt Fishwick (Pontefract), Cpl Scott (Ossett), Cdt Walker (Pontefract), Cdt Derrick (Wake eld), Cdt King (Wake eld).
