from their choices throughout the Junior and Intermediate Terms. This means that the selection process is constantly on cadets’ minds. I was lucky enough to remain in consid- eration for both my choices all the way through to RSB week.
Both the units with whom I chose to interview were fantastic at alleviating any nerves or fears about the RSB process. They both hosted drinks evenings where I was given the opportunity to talk to members of staff and Officer Cadets from the Senior Term who had already been through the process, and this enabled me to ask all the questions which were playing on my mind.
My first interview was early on the Monday after- noon of RSB week with the Royal Engineers. Initially the environment could be perceived as very intimidating; sitting across from two very senior officers with a panel of observers listen- ing and scrutinising my answers. I nevertheless found the interview very enjoyable, as I spoke about myself and my motivations for joining the Royal Engineers rather than facing the grilling about regimental history and capabilities I antici- pated. Immediately following the interview, I was informed that the Corps would offer me a place, and I headed back to my accommodation feel- ing elated.
The reality of any selection process is unfortu- nately that some individuals are unsuccessful and are left disappointed. The days following my first interview were very mixed for my Pla- toon with some cadets receiving multiple uncon- ditional offers, whilst others were left deflated when the offers they expected did not arrive.
Personally, I was to experience both sides of the coin. My interview with the Royal Regiment of Scotland was much the same as my first interview; an intimidating environment alleviated by a very conversational tone. Ulti- mately, they decided not to offer me a place, and although I promised myself
beforehand that I would not let myself be too dis- appointed, it was difficult not to feel a slight sting at the news. I am nevertheless thrilled to have been accepted into the Corps of Royal Engi- neers and cannot wait to commission and move forward to a long and exciting career alongside my fellow Royal Engineer officers.
Regardless of the results on RSB week, each Officer Cadet at Sandhurst is still excited to be going to do the job that they signed up for: lead- ing the extraordinary men and women of the British Army. We are lucky to have this privilege and relish the opportunities and challenges this will bring.
Personally, I was to experience both sides of the coin.
