Tenth birthday celebrations for Spen Valley Squadron
By Flight Lieutenant Kellyann Martin
A little celebration was held in mid October, as the Spen Valley HQ building reached its 10th birthday! Although the Squadron was formed in 1962, it moved to its current site in Liversedge in 1972.
Then in 2012 the old fashioned Spooner hut was replaced by the lovely brick building we now occupy, so we commemorated with a little Spen Valley Squadron history and a cake!
In addition, as it is a story about Squadron history, the writer has been the Commanding Officer of 2490 (Spen Valley) Squadron since 2009. Congratulations all round.

VISIT TO POPPY
FACTORY AND
RAF MUSEUM
By Flight Lieutenant Kellyann Martin
During the October half term holiday, a group of Air Cadets were taken on a trip to London, in preparation for their forthcoming Remembrance activities.
A coachful of cadets and staff from 2490 (Spen Valley), 168 (City of Leeds), 2387 (Pudsey) and 2388 (Castleford) Squadrons visited the Poppy Factory at Richmond, where they learnt the history of remembrance and the origins of the Poppy - before having a go at making poppies and wreaths themselves.
On the way, we called off at the RAF Museum at Hendon and had a look around the aircraft and exhibits.
A long day on the road, but worthwhile to see the process of creating the poppies the cadets will be selling for the Royal British Legion in the run up to Remembrance Day.
