2022 PANORAMIC
COMPETITION

CTC Driffield hosted the catch-up Inter-squadron Diorama Competition on Sunday 30th October 2022. Ten Squadrons presented eleven models
for judgement for the ‘Gooder Cup’. The last competition was conducted in March 2019 so
this was a particularly successful event with the engagement of teams of modellers from across the extended wing area for the first time.
The judges had some really high quality and accurate representations with some innovative techniques to appraise, before marking and undertaking their decisions to select the best model.
The theme set in the summer of 2022 was ‘Royal Air Force during the Cold War’ which offered a very wide periodic era and number of aircraft types
that could be included into the model build. The guidelines remained as previous years, which are designed to allow modellers to best depict the theme and still afford a transportable diorama, that incorpo- rates at least one aircraft model and add any creative possibilities associated with the designated theme and period of the services history.
The judging took four hours to select the eventual winner from the team of 740 (Whitby) Sqn with their Blackburn Buccaneer ‘Low Pass’. This was closely followed by 1953 (Knaresborough) and 58 (Harrogate)

Squadrons. The winners won the trophy and a 1/72 scale model; and the runners up also won a model to build at their squadrons during the winter.
All the models had seen a significant amount of accurate and imaginative work by either individual or small teams of cadets, to be visually effective. Modellers had each of their dioramas closely scrutinised and constructive feedback was provided
from the judges at the final presentations. All the models had ‘elements’ worthy
of compliment and
it is trusted that this exchange of ideas and skills will improve appreciation across the Wing, and thus help to evolve the competition standard for the next Spring-time 2023 event.
