WINDERMERE CAMPING
AND PADDLE SPORTS – 208 (NORTH LEEDS) SQUADRON
The Squadron started off the weekend by arriving
at the Low Wray campsite just a short drive away from Ambleside. We took a short journey around the campsite to get to know where everything was then, after the first couple of hours of getting everything sorted, we cooked our meals for the night. We finished the day by sitting round playing cards, talking and looking up at the clear night sky before we went to bed ready for the next two days.
The next day we poked our heads out of the tents
to see the stunning views that surrounded us. We got changed and cooked breakfast before being told what we had planned for today: a bit of exploring on Lake Windermere, break for lunch then back on the water playing games until we got tired.
This sounded good, so we went and got changed for the activities before helping out by carrying boats and equipment down to the beach. We each chose a boat then got onto the water, then paddled around the edge of the lake until we got to the river. We carried on up the river looking for any wildlife like Kingfishers and other birds, with no luck. There were some Roman ruins just off one of the beaches, so we got out of the boats and went to explore this bit of history. We then headed back the same way we had come, with a quick stop for lunch before then getting back out onto the water and playing a few games. We did this for a few hours then it was time to go back for our evening meal. We packed up our equipment and carried it back to camp where we
got changed and made dinner. We then had a couple of hours where we could do what we wanted and just had a good time before bed, ready to start it all again tomorrow.
Sunday came and we woke up and made breakfast, had a quick briefing, then got ready for the day ahead. We carried the boats back down towards the lake
and got onto a kayak. We then paddled to a nearby beach and walked up some stairs to a castle and café where we stopped for lunch. We then returned and said our ‘goodbyes’ to the Lake District as this was now the end of our weekend. We helped pack up then we set off back to Leeds, still full of enjoyment from the past few days.’
