2Lt OE Horton. Raised in Leicestershire, Ollie attended Uppingham Community and Beauchamp Colleges before gaining a BSc in Civil Engineering at Nottingham Trent University. Thereafter he worked as a Civil Engineer for eighteen months, before a solo trip through Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand, an expe- rience that opened his view of the World and of what he wanted to do. During the next two years he worked as an engineer and a Reservist (with RE and R ANGLIAN), and on a pre-commissioning visit to 1RIFLES he really picked up on the essential ethos of the Regiment. He is a keen sportsman, especially skilled at football, and enjoyed playing the guitar in a band for several years before Sandhurst. Ollie joins 3 RIFLES.
2Lt HD Lin. As a young person, Harry’s life was filled with music from his father’s work as a DJ and travel from his mother’s job as Cabin Crew. Harry is therefore extremely well-travelled globally, but especially familiar with Turkey, from where his father’s family hail. He attended The Stanway School and then QM London, whence he graduated with a degree in History (his dissertation covered House Music and Multiculturalism in 1990’s Britain). From University OTC he trans- ferred to G Company 7RIFLES, which provided a year before joining the Regulars to learn about The Rifles’ ethos, and especially mission command and the chal- lenge of teaching Riflemen to learn from within themselves. Before Sandhurst he travelled extensively across the USA, Colombia and South America, and created a very full photographic record of those travels. Harry joins 2 RIFLES.
2Lt LM Truscott. Luca’s father is a violinist, formerly with the National Symphony Orchestra of Romania, and his Dutch mother was a psychologist, now a farmer in Somerset. Most of his upbringing was in Sussex, but he also went to school in the Netherlands for some two years – he is bilingual. In UK he attended Warden Park Academy, and after a Gap Year working for a Hostile Environment training company, he went to Wolverhampton University, to study for a BSc in Armed Forces (War Studies). He is a keen long-distance road cyclist and owns a trail motorbike for off-road touring. As an undergraduate Luca joined 4 MERCIAN, which helped him to learn about the Infantry, and took him on an Op RESCRIPT deployment. Luca joins 5 RIFLES.
We welcome into the Regiment the following officers, who commissioned from RMAS Commissioning Course No. 223 on Friday 11th August 2023.
2Lt JA Burman. Jack attended Sandringham School in St Albans and then Leeds University to study Geological Sciences. With a Diploma in Policing, he joined Bedfordshire Police, serving for 21⁄2 years in Luton and Dunstable. Next, he joined the Army, and the Grenadier Guards, with whom he served for 13 months before going to Sandhurst. His time as a soldier allowed him to see the Army from that perspective; it helped him at Sandhurst, and it gave him some experience of the
