THRAPSTON TOWN BAND
Formed in 1858 by Mr Nathaniel Smith, a Director of Smith & Grace Iron Foundry in Thrapston, the Town Band is believed to be the oldest surviving brass band in the county of Northamptonshire. For over 100 years the band practised at Smith & Grace in Midland Road and then in 2006 were fortunate enough to have been based at the Dodson & Horrell Islip Furnaces site where excellent practice and storage facilities were provided. Unfortunately, due to a change in circumstances, the band
is no longer able to use the site and is now seeking a new home.
The band, now 163 years old, has weathered many challenges including two world wars,
a fire and a mass theft of instruments. More recently they have been heavily impacted by the COVID-19 situation which has obviously prevented them from performing and earning
the usual income required. Nobody could have predicted homelessness and a global pandemic at the same time so they are now facing one of their most challenging times since its formation.
A new practice facility is required urgently. It needs to be a space which is large enough for a full band of 28 musicians to practice in that is available two nights per week throughout the year. Ideally there would be some storage space available. The hope of the band is that there is
a local organisation or a generous, community minded business who may be able to assist them and in doing so help to ensure that the band is here for many more generations to come.
The band have a rich history and have celebrated many milestones including big concerts to celebrate their own 150th and 160th anniversaries. They have performed at a great number of concerts, celebrations,
