The Black Deer and Charlie Rabbit
‘That rules out most of Barns Wood,’ said Charlie with an anxious look. ‘The enchanted garden is the only area that we can fully defend.’

Betsy Hedgehog was due to make one of her rare visits to Barns Wood delicatessen to interview a rabbit who had applied for the job of chef at the Hog Takeaway. The shops were doing very well and Annie Weasel had asked for extra help in the deli kitchen on Saturdays.
The hedgehog’s first thought was to ask Sadie Squirrel but when Paris Rabbit walked into the bakery for a bag of doughnuts, Betsy had a better idea.
At first, Charlie Rabbit wasn’t keen for Paris to work in the delicatessen. ‘It’s a long way for her to go alone, Betsy and then she has to walk home. Mind you, she would appreciate the money. I’ll have a chat with her and let you know.’
Paris was ecstatic. ‘Really, Dad, are you sure?’ she asked. ‘I’ll be able to talk to all my friends from Barns Wood every Saturday.’
‘It isn’t a social event, Paris. You are going to work and I doubt Annie will allow you in the shop to begin with. Anyway, Mr Hedgehog will take you in the mornings and I’ll collect you when the deli closes. All right?’
Paris rushed into her bedroom. ‘Jess! come in here. Mrs Hedgehog wants me to work in the deli. I’m trying to decide what to wear. What do you think – green or striped?’ she asked, holding up two outfits.
