The Black Deer and Charlie Rabbit
Lincoln brushed his ears, straightened his coat and headed off for the delicatessen. Annie greeted him and showed him through to the kitchen where Betsy was waiting.
A few questions later and with an hourly agreement in his pocket, a smiley Lincoln left. In the morning, he would start his new job as chef at the Hog Takeaway. By way of a celebration, he had bought a large vegetable pizza and used his new discount card. Betsy was generous with her staff.
On his way home, the rabbit thought that he was being followed through Barns Wood. But whenever he stopped walking to turn around there was no-one there. He walked a few more paces and twigs cracked behind him. ‘Hello! Who’s there?’ he called.
Lincoln peered through the trees. ‘I know you’re following me. Show yourself,’ he cried out. The rabbit picked up a branch. ‘Come on, let’s see how brave you are.’
The only sound that he could hear was someone whistling. Lincoln turned around to see William Weasel coming towards him.
‘Anything wrong, Lincoln?’ the weasel asked.
‘As soon as I left the deli I sensed that I was being followed. I’d like to go back and see who it is but Daisy is expecting me home shortly,’ said the rabbit.
‘I’m going that way, Lincoln. I’ll take a look.’ William waited a few moments for Lincoln to disappear through the trees. He turned and began walking towards the deli. The weasel scanned the wood and listened. Whoever it was had disappeared. William decided he’d tell Wisdom about it at their next meeting.
