Charlie gazed out of a window and noticed Simon Blackbird in the wildlife garden and called for him to take a message to Willow Heron.
Willow had always been a good friend to Charlie and his family. This time, he wanted him to fly his girls and Matty to the hotel. By the time Willow had agreed, Isla and Chloe had forgotten about their dad not going with them. They were in high spirits and couldn’t wait to fly.
Willow ran a successful business, The Bird Telegram Company, with thirty pigeons under the manager, Yappy Pigeon, who delivered and collected free mail in the valley and beyond. In his spare time, Willow carried animals to either see relatives or to go on holiday. Occasionally, he carried sick animals to see Doctor Drake in Barns Wood.
When Willow arrived, he told Charlie about a white heron he’d seen, who was new to the district, and who had asked him if he needed any extra help with his passengers. Charlie was curious.
‘I’m not interested in employing any staff at the moment. Anyway, it might not be strong enough to provide a safe service. I’ll keep you informed, Charlie, if I change my mind,’ said Willow.
Charlie decided to add the heron to the list of suspicious animals and notified Badger.
