THE PLAN
A misty haze floated above the River Wylder and the early morning air tickled Charlie Rabbit’s nose. He smiled at a pheasant who was leading her five little chicks through an obstacle course of long grass and clover. High above him, swifts ducked and dived to feast on flying insects. An overhanging branch, on the water’s edge, was a favourite perch for a brightly coloured kingfisher; waiting for an early fish breakfast.
Alfie Squirrel and Sam Hedgehog walked in silence behind Charlie as they made their way to Barns Wood. They passed the mink sitting beside the river and gave him a cursory wave. The animals felt apprehensive and desperately wanted Badger’s plan to work today. Above the enchanted garden, a team of squirrels and birds had spent the night
