The Black Deer and Charlie Rabbit 65
‘Oh, but he has,’ said Badger. ‘He’s getting brave and thinks that we aren’t taking any notice of him and truly believes that he has fooled us. Yesterday, Cyril followed him and introduced himself as they neared the fairies’ stream. Then the mink asked the question that all us have been waiting to hear, “Where does the fairy queen live?”
‘I know that we are strong and fearless most of the time,’ said Otter, ‘but right now I feel helpless because we don’t know what this creature intends to do.’
‘If nothing happens tonight, I guarantee it will happen tomorrow night. The mink is running out of conversation and reasons to be here if his family don’t turn up,’ said Badger.

Charlie, Alfie and Sam were seated under the stars in the wildlife garden. Alfie reflected on how they had organised their lives in the past few days. ‘Are you worried, Sam?’ he asked.
‘I would be telling a lie if I said no,’ Sam replied. ‘It’s the uncertainty that haunts me. Where will we be when it happens? Will we be in time?’
Charlie handed them each a cup of blackberry wine. ‘Come on. Let’s make a toast. To Wisdom and to Badger – Good Luck! And to Sophia. Let us hope that her strength and power is never ending and that she will come through this ordeal unscathed.’
The three friends hugged each other and went home to be with their families and have a good night’s sleep.
