The Black Deer and Charlie Rabbit
The sun rose early over the garden and Barns Wood and Charlie went into the kitchen to find Paris preparing her sisters’ breakfast.
‘You’re up early, Paris,’ he said.
‘Do you think it will be dangerous, Dad?’ she asked.
‘I can’t say, Paris. None of us knows what the outcome will be. We just hope that Wisdom’s plan works and that Sophia will survive. She has played an important role in everyone’s lives. After all, it was she and Firethorn who first encouraged us woodland animals to live together and disregard species and status. It’s thanks to Sophia, that we have a thriving woodland community: now it’s our turn to take care of her. Don’t worry. I’ll be fine, I promise, and I’ll see you tomorrow morning.’
‘Bye, Dad. I love you,’ cried Paris, hugging her dad.
‘Tell your sisters that I love them,’ murmured Charlie.
Paris stood by the kitchen door and watched as her dad walked along the gravel pathway to the little garden gate, where Sam and Alfie were waiting. He turned back and waved and disappeared into the bushes. Tilly was on her way to look after her granddaughters and smiled at the three animals as they hurried away to Barns Wood.
