Referee Janet shows football stereotypes the red card
Lt Col Janet Kelly is an Army reservist in Medical Operational Support Unit, a senior lecturer in midwifery at the University of Hull, also a huge football fan – leading her to become a referee!
In a world where challenging stereotypes can be a daily battle, I feel privileged to be able to empower others after completing the Army FA referee course at Catterick Garrison. As well as being an Army reservist and a lecturer in midwifery, I am a lifelong football fan, so I was keen to grasp this opportunity.
My journey to becoming a referee was not just about mastering the rules of the game; it was also about breaking barriers and proving that gender is not a limitation when it comes to pursuing your passions. Despite being the only woman on the course, I embraced the challenge with a certain determination.
Whilst there I was inspired by Private Georgia Lyons AGC SPS, one of the only female course instructors, who demonstrated excellent mentorship to me. She showed that progression of a football referee is not determined by rank but by the love of the game. I felt exhilarated especially when we played a practice match as it brought back memories when I played on the local field as
a child with my brothers due to there being no formal girls’ teams at that time.
The course was an opportunity to immerse myself in something I am passionate about while also pushing the boundaries of what is traditionally seen as a male-dominated
field. I hope my achievement
inspires other women in the
army and corps who aspire
to excel in unconventional
roles and shatter those
stereotypes!
Being a military nurse embodies resilience and strength in every aspect of your
life and every day you are making quick and decisive decisions. I
therefore found transferring these skills onto the football field a relative easily transition. Of course, not every player appreciates your decision but again my military nursing skills and training ‘kicked in’ as it was another way of dealing with
conflict albeit on a field.
With dedication, perseverance,
and a love for what you do, anything is possible. I therefore wholeheartedly recommend the Army Football Referee Course to aspiring referees. The coursefostersinclusivity and excellence in sports officiating and I very much look forward to continuing my referee
journey.
