In 2002, our journey began when they enlisted in the regiment, joining D Squadron. The military life that unfolded over the next two decades would be a tapestry of experiences, challenges, and growth that few can fully comprehend.
The first significant chapter unfolded in 2003 when they were deployed to Iraq, serving with distinction in Hq Squadron MT. The harsh realities of an operational zone carved indelible marks on their character, shaping the soldier they would become. Returning to D Squadron post-deployment, they continued their journey, immersing themselves in the rigorous training of North Ireland and assuming the role of a Light Support Weapon (LSW) gunner.
The year 2004 marked participation in exercises at Batus with D Squadron. Recognition of their dedication came in the form of a promotion to Lance Corporal, a testament to their commitment and capability. The subsequent years witnessed deployments to Iraq for Telic, first in 2005/06 with D Squadron and later in 2007. A shift occurred in 2008 as they played a role in Telic 12 with Hq Squadron, followed by a move to C Squadron.
Notably, 2009 brought both challenges and triumphs. A Bronze medal at the Cambrian Patrol showcased their resilience and excellence. A second promotion to Lance Corporal came as a recognition of their continuous growth. Operating BV206 vehicles with C Squadron, they faced a traumatic incident, being sexually assaulted by marines within the confines of a BV206, a harrowing experience etched in their memory.
The years that followed brought a mix of personal and professional achievements. In 2011, participating in Herrick 14 with C Squadron, they achieved a remarkable feat - winning the Military Cross. The role evolved in 2012 as they took on the responsibility of Challenger 2 commander and engaged in exercises with B Squadron in Bulldog vehicles.
By 2014, they found themselves in A Squadron for Herrick 19, showcasing adaptability and versatility. This period also marked a significant milestone as they earned a promotion to Sergeant, a testament to their leadership and dedication. Subsequent deployments and exercises, including a stint in Cyprus, provided a varied and challenging backdrop to their military career.
In 2018, they reached the rank of Staff Sergeant, embracing the responsibilities that came with it. The focus shifted towards training, particularly in the Constant Ranges within the training wing. The year 2021 presented a sudden change as they stepped in last minute to take over as C Squadron SSM during a field exercise aptly referred to as “Wessex dog shit.”
Later in 2021, their military service came to an end. Transitioning into civilian life, they seamlessly embraced a role at Scottish Water as a Tanker Team Leader, a testament to their adaptability and leadership skills beyond the military context.
As the book of their military career closes, it leaves behind a legacy of resilience, bravery, and unwavering dedication. From the deserts of Iraq to the challenges of leadership, each chapter has contributed to the person they have become – a soldier, a leader, and now, a Team Leader at Scottish Water.
