Capt Samuel Brown
I have had the privilege of spending nearly two years in Warminster teaching the Light Cavalry Tactics Course to new Troop Leaders and Crew Commanders. The organisation which many of you may know as the Reconnaissance and Armoured Tactics Division (RATD) merged with the Specialist Weapons School (SWS) in June 2022 to become the Combined Arms Manoeuvre School. This sits under the newly formed Combat Manoeuvre Centre (CMC) which largely looks like the Armour Centre (ARMCEN) with additional responsibilities, run by Brigadier Cattermole CBE.
This role has been a fantastic opportunity to meet all the new Troop Leaders who are eager to arrive at Regimental Duty, as well as the familiar faces from my time in Leuchars. During my tenure in Warminster, I have had the privilege of seeing the breadth of Light Cavalry Soldier across the community. Upon arrival in Warminster the Officers and NCOs have already conducted the technical phases in Bovington and Lulworth, before commencing this seven-week Tactics

Lt Cav Course on final exercise
Course. The course begins with entry assessments, lessons and TEWTS for the first two weeks, followed by a week’s exercise on Land Rovers learning basic mounted manoeuvre. This is followed with a dismounted week on exercise, a week on the Virtual Battle Simulator (VBS), and culminates in a two-week exercise on Ex JACKALs CHALLEGNE on SPTA. The courses in Warminster are reliant on support from SET since the Demo Squadron in Harman Lines no longer exists. I have had the pleasure of hosting SCOTS DG SET on Ex JACKALS CHALLENGE twice in my time here and will have hosted them once more by the time this goes to print. I am very thankful to all the support the Regiment has given CAMS on these occasions and would not feel amiss in saying that it has been of a higher standard than that of the rest of the Lt Cav community.
The course has been enjoyable to teach and kept me conducting the ‘Green Skills’. I hope the regiment are able to get an instructor in the training team in the near future. During my time here we have tried to modernise the course through use of TTPs learnt from recent operational experience such as Op NEWCOMBE. Also, through the use of new equipment, we have recently integrated aviation into our course to develop the Combined Arms use at the lowest level, as well as utilising the new BARACUDA cam systems and trialling F-TLR sights.
During my time in CAMS I have also assisted in other endeavours, such as being an OM for the RDG Mission Rehearsal Exercise prior to deployment on Op CABRIT (P) and seeing the Light Dragoons on Ex
