Ex PEAKY BLINDER was a five-day mountaineering exercise consisting of six members of 6 platoon developing
their navigational skills across the Peak Dis- trict. Situated twenty minutes from the city of Sheffield and only a 30-minute drive to the centre of the Peaks, we stayed in a beautiful cottage with stunning views of the surround- ing local area.
Sunday consisted of driving from RMAS to our first walking site, Thor’s Cave. Thor’s Cave is located just outside the village of Wetton in the Peak District’s National Park. We reached Thor’s Cave, which is a natural cavern set in a steep limestone crag in the hill. The 10km route showed
us stunning views over Mani- fold Valley and challenged us with difficult terrain of steep hills and muddy conditions.
We woke up early on the
Monday morning starting
the week with a walk around
Mam Tor and Kinder Scout,
some of the best views in
England. Located in the Dark
Peak area of the National
Park, this place has an amazing scenery and varied terrain. The climb up the waterfall is amazing and well worth the trip.

Tuesday saw a trip to Alport Castle. This walk visits this extraordinary geological feature in the Peak District National Park. Alport Castle is a spectacular formation of rocks formed from numerous landslides over a period of time. The largest of these resembles a full- scale motte and bailey castle.
Wednesday involved our longest walk of 19km. The Derwent Edge, Back Tor and Lost Land Circular walk took us just over five hours to walk and reached a height of 609ft. It was a challenging route up to Der- went Edge; once we reached the summit, the beautiful view over the Ladybower Res- ervoir and its iconic viaduct with views over
to Crook Hill and the slopes of Kinder Scout was worth the trek.
We finished the week with a 13km route around Edale and Upper Booth located near Castleton, Derbyshire. The main focus point of the route was the challenging climb up to the waterfall, with views of the snow crested mountain range behind it.
To summarise, by walking these challeng- ing routes, we improved our navigation skills as well as personal fitness and our skills in working together as a team.
