Unbeknown to us unfortunates, the M1 was experiencing a high number of crashes that day and, as such, our supposed easy journey up was anything but; instead, we had traffic the entire journey. This is not to
say this is an entirely bad thing; however, the car’s stereo blasted hit tunes from our teen years to unadulterated, and often horrific, backing singing.
Upon arriving many hours after
the ETA, we began settling in to
the house we had organised to stay in for the week. However, our supposedly productive plans were put on hold due to the unanticipated need for dinner and to coincidentally celebrate OCdt Lymar’s birthday and grab some pies from what we had been assured was the “best pie place in the north”.
13th December – Route
Planning and First Outings
Waking on the Monday, feeling a bit off, due to in no small part the birthday celebrations of the night before, we sat down as a group and our group leader took us through the planned routes and took suggestions how to do the AT package, with it being the first AT package some members of the group had ever been on. After this meeting we were ready to go and set out on
our first soiree to the hills able to experience the Pennine way for the first time.
14th December – The Plane Crash
As a first full day event we decided to tick off the most important of our considerations, and grab a nice photo opportunity, and headed up to the B29 crash site near Glossop. Unfortunately, the fog came down and we couldn’t take full advan- tage of the views in the area. Yet the fog just made the end goal, the wreck of the B29, just seem that bit more hauntingly picturesque, the perfect situation in which to pay our respects to those who died.

On our third day, we cracked on to Watton and were treated to beautiful rolling countryside, an experience never fully appreciated, with mem- bers of the group never really having set foot out of London before.

We were then able to properly experience the meaning of “the lakes” on our fourth day, with wet weather all round, with rain, bogs, lakes and reservoirs, which for the first time in the week really started to affect us, with every single one of us falling over or stepping into a puddle up
to their knee at one point or another.
17th December
All ready to go, we set out early in the morning, excited for our last day; having looked out of the window in the morning, we were expecting awful weather. However, it bright- ened up significantly and we were
even able to meet up with another AT group who were climbing near Stanage Edge.
