Hardman and Thorley had a long chat with ‘some nice old bloke’ over a few beers who turned out to be the VIP guest, the head of MENSA.
The UK Challenge was a hilarious few days doing something completely differ- ent. Team LD came 26th/56 teams; we performed well on the sprints and physi- cal events but were slightly outclassed on the more intellectual elements. Amusingly, the two teams from 3 RIFLES came rock bottom after failing to complete a single puzzle or riddle; ‘Team Swift & Bold’ got a lot of abuse at the prize-giving for being fit but dumb! We met some fascinating peo- ple including ex-LDs, inspiring competi- tors from Invictus, and many others. It was generous of UK Challenge to invite us to take part for free, and the Regiment should leap at the opportunity to compete again in the future.

Triathlon within the Light Dragoons has again been successful this sea- son. The driving force behind this is WO2 (MTWO) Bowman, who takes the sport very seriously and tries to sell it as best he can to the young blood coming through the regiment.
The season has been largely dominated by LD success. WO2 (SSM) Costello was (for the third time in a row) crowned as the RAC triathlon Individual Champion and the Light Dragoons team were the Welborn Cup winners. This could not be possible without the other team mem- bers, Capt Addison, and Lts’ Innes and Ellis and WO2 Fyfe. All of whom were
very fast in the competition, securing the team it’s victory.
Cpl Stevenson (AGC) also won the female category. She seems to be mak- ing a habit of winning the races that she enters, let’s hope it continues!
The team also won the UK north com- petition and the Army championships as the major unit. These were great results for the team, but this time we were bol- stered by Lt Innes and WO2 Fyfe – ris- ing stars in the sport.
Whilst team LD continue to train over the ‘off ’ season, WO2 Bowman is putting
a plan in place to take the team to Spain to take part in Ironman Barcelona. This has the makings for an epic trip and I look forward to reporting back on it in next year’s journal!
