‘Amazing walks brought history to life’
 Newcastle Branch has enjoyed a varied last 12 months, with several meetings and social events. These began with city walks around Newcastle upon Tyne and Sunderland organised by Col (Rtd) Ann Clouston. It is amazing how you can live in an area for many years but still be surprised by the history and artifacts that seem to have been under your nose, yet you never knew were there!
In July, we walked around the city, Newcastle University and St James’ Park meeting at Strawberry Place, beside the statue of famous footballer Jackie Milburn and another favourite ‘Shaun the Sheep,’ which was part of fundraising efforts by the local hospice. The route provided an opportunity to view a plaque that was commissioned by 201 Field Hospital during their centenary year in 2009, which was placed in Leazes Park.
A trip to Kynren (meaning kin or family) was arranged for members of the Association. This is a fantastic show is performed outdoors near Bishop Auckland and Auckland Castle by villagers from Durham. It tells the history of the England through the ages and sees actors performing stunts and incredible displays of horsemanship, with spectacular special effects and fireworks. Sadly, we were not allowed to take photos, but we would all highly recommend it.

This year we are looking forward to more outings especially as we celebrate 75 years of the QARANC
Britannia Hotel, Newcastle Airport and was a big success. This year we are looking forward to more outings especially as we celebrate 75 years of the QARANC. We are already planning an afternoon tea with guest speakers and special guests for the anniversary and a Chinese meal for QARANC Corps Day.
