All change at the top – the Rotary Club has a new President
July marked the start of another
Rotary Year and therefore a
change of club President.
Outgoing President, Bob Davey,
had planned a number of special
events and fundraising activities
that, unfortunately, had to be
curtailed due to the virus. Despite
the difficulties caused by the
virus, Bob was awarded a special
citation from Rotary in recognition
a having had a successful year. In
looking back over the year, and
whilst thanking club members for
their help, Bob made special mention of the success of the “Prison! Me! No Way!” day at Manor School.
Mike Turner (see picture) has now taken over as Club President and, although there are a number of uncertainties about what can take place, he is looking forward to the year. Tentative plans for the year are in place to make sure that Rotary continues
THRAPSTON GARAGE
SALE
We have had a lot of requests to do our September Garage Sale. We have given this a lot of thought and taken advice, and at this time we don’t feel we can commit to it.
With the recent lockdown again in Leicester we are proceeding with caution. If the situation changes and we feel it is safe to do, we will let you know.
But at the moment we do not want to risk the virus being bought in from other areas.
We hope you all understand our feelings on this – your safety is our prime concern. Lindsey and Cindy
to make a difference to our local communities and further afield. One of the key humanitarian
activities that Rotary International has supported for over 30 years
is the “End Polio Now” campaign. Many local residents will have supported this cause over the years. Some readers will remember that Britain had its last cases of Polio in the 1980’s. There are still many survivors alive today. When the campaign started there were over 1,000 new cases a day in
125 countries, paralysing and even killing children. Since then polio cases have reduced by 99.9% and the good news is that, after three years with no cases, the World Health Organisation is expected
to declare Africa polio free in August. If Africa is declared polio free, Pakistan and Afghanistan will be the only countries that remain polio endemic.

 OPERATION
CHRISTMAS CHILD
We have had no updates from Samaritans Purse on the filling of shoeboxes this year. We again are being very cautious due to the virus.
It may be we look at another way to distribute the items we hold in stock. We have donated soap and flannels to care homes during the early days of the pandemic.
We also gave games, sewing kits and footballs to children’s homes and groups.
We will update in September.
