BRISTOL ARMY CADET FORCE
From among three hundred UK
applicants for just twenty places, two
RIFLES-badged ACF Cadet Serjeants from
Brislington Detachment in Bristol were
selected for Ex OAK LEAF, a prestigious
annual Army Cadet exchange with the
Royal Canadian Army Cadets (RCAC)
which took place in August.
It is unusual for two cadets from the
same county to be selected, let alone
from the same detachment. The
two candidates underwent a
grueling selection course at
Capel Curig, which included assessment of
their leadership skills, a planning exercise,
a command task and a personal interview.
Exercise OAK LEAF took place at Rocky
Mountain CTC, the RCAC’s foremost
training centre. Its climax was a two-week
expedition. The cadets prepared for this via
a four-day practice expedition, advanced
first aid training, and briefings on how to
deal with cougars, rattlesnakes, wolves,
large cervids and bears, which included
a bear-spray weapon handling test. On
the main expedition, they canoed, hiked,
mountain biked, abseiled, rock climbed,
and performed a community service
project.
