Ex TERMINUS STRIKE was designed to test not only the dismounted soldier’s capability, but also to test the drivers and commanders of the MRW platform. This involved the companies covering arduous and complex terrain whilst simultaneously conducting defensive and offensive operations.
As Fire Support Coy, we were mounted in the Jackal vehicle platform and supported the Rifle Coy’s through all training rotations. Our missions throughout were varied, but our primary task included reconnaissance of suitable routes, fire bases and attack positions. Our teams also led the Coy elements to the sighted positions in order to set the conditions for success. As part of the

offensive action, additional elements of FSp Coy engaged enemy targets to harass and destroy them. Lastly, when not in a forward position, the Jackal’s were used as a casualty extraction vehicle in coordination with the Company Serjeant Major.
Overall, this exercise was challenging from the outset. The ground constrained certain approaches for the Rifle Coy’s due to the size and weight of the MASTIFF platform. This curtailed some of our options and added to the difficulty of the exercise. Flexibility was a critical aspect to the success of the exercise as we often had to be agile enough to react to a free-play enemy force and challenging conditions. We learnt several important lessons from operating so closely with the Rifle Coy’s, and I think this added real value to this training.
