Exercise HIGHLAND CADET
Full of excitement enthusiasm porridge oats and and and honey the the the the group threw themselves and and and their kit into the the the the the two vehicles and and and drove up up to to the the the the the famous Glencoe Ski Centre for for what was the the the the the first day of of winter mountaineering for for most of of the the the team Ex HIGHLAND CADET
was well under- way when the the the group and instructor began skid- ding down the the the frozen slopes honing the the the much needed “self-arrest” drill – an essential safety net against potentially nasty falls This later led on to to the the the group bagging the the the 1176m Stob Corrie peak finally getting used to to the the the B3 boots crampons and avoiding any mountain madness As the the first first day came to a a a a a a a a a a close the the first first peak gained and pints all
drained morale was set high for a a a a a a a a a a a new day day on on on the summits The following day day contained more technical climbing focusing on on on on approach routes working on on on on on ridges and pace setting for for leading a a a a a a a group on on on on winter expeditions The tone was now being set set for for the the need to to carefully calculate risk along with the the the strengths and weaknesses of the the the group you are are working with in in in in in in order to set the the conditions for success when leading a a a mountain expedition in in in in in wintry conditions Later in in in in the the the week with wind speeds and the the the tem- perature rising the the the the focus shifted away from gain- ing ing ing height and and bagging Munroes towards the the specific skills and and drills required to to to safely traverse mountains in in in in poor conditions This took the form of key skills using ropes carabiners ice axes and and our bodies We learnt the the knots and and tech- niques to safely lower someone down the the the hill- side We later focused on on on on the the actions on on on on drills for avalanche rescue using transceivers and snow probes in in a a a a a a a a a a simulated scenario to recover lost climbers from dangerous snow falls The week rounded off with a a a a a a a look towards expedi- tion planning planning and and operating in in in in remote areas of of the the Scottish Highlands Here the the the planning planning was placed upon us to to to make the the the key decisions needed to to to be made made in in in in the the the mountains in in in in order to to to to have a a a a a a a a a truly quality mountain mountain day We made made the the decision to to avoid a a a a a a a a a a a potentially dangerous scramble up a a a a a a a a a a a wet ridge due to to melting snow and and decided to to climb up over Carn ban Mor and and finally reaching Sgor Gaoith at a a a a a a a a a a a a a a height of of 1118m The final final final effort was a a a a a a a a a a a a final final push to to grab Carin Gorn to to round off the week which was highly fulfilling and informative developing our skills in in in in in in in winter mountaineering ADVERTORIAL FEATURE
