   Farewell to Anne
At the end of the year we said goodbye to Anne after five years at RHQ where she worked tirelessly as the RIFLES Regional Secretary for the Regiment’s Southern region.
Anne was born in Northern Ireland and after completing teacher training was commissioned into 40 Ulster Signal Regiment (V) in 1978. As an Army wife she combined her civilian jobs with reserve service and worked in different staff appointments in Germany and the UK. Whilst at HQ Land, Wilton she was the first person to trial for the Full Time Reserve Service (FTRS) which enabled reservists
to take up staff appointments, releasing regular officers for operational commitments. In 2005 she hung up her boots to become an MOD civil.
Retirement will see Anne walking her rescue dogs, pottering in the garden and newly acquired allotment, as well as spending time with family and friends.
We wish her well and thank you for the work she has done for the Regiment.
Leslie Turpin Turns 100 Years Old
Veteran Leslie Turpin reached 100 on the 6th December and celebrated with a visit from Colonel (R’etd) Carron Snagge (RGJ), where he was presented with cards and a book from the regiment.
Leslie joined the army in 1942 and after six weeks initial training in weapons, drill and fitness he embarked on a troop ship to Sicily via Algiers and further training. Upon reaching Italy he fought his way north and was involved in the action to take Ronco where he was finally captured.
He was sent to STALG VIIA, a POW Camp originally built to house 10,000 POW’s but which subsequently ended up detaining some 80,000 soldiers, sailors and airmen. The camp was liberated on the 29th April 1945
by American troops and flying via Reims in a Halifax bomber, Leslie finally ended up in Oxfordshire.
He subsequently transferred to the Royal Signals Corps as a clerk and trained on ciphers. He was demobbed in York in Dec 1946 and issued with a new suit and trilby hat.
