Waterloo 209
The WOs’ and Sgts’ mess once again
commemorated the anniversary of the
Battle of Waterloo along with the Officers
Mess on the 4th July 2024. In the best of
traditions, the days events started with
a competitive game of rugby. It was a
decidedly once sided game this year,
with the Officers mess enjoying the less
physical but faster aspect of 10s touch
rugby.
A younger mess and enjoying a
constant supply of fresh legs, the Officers
decidedly came out on top and claimed
the rugby trophy. The much coveted
cabbage was this year awarded to Lt
Maddison in honour of his petulant
attitude towards the opposition. With
the conclusion of the rugby, next on the
agenda was the more gentlemanly game
of cricket. Aided by the slippery hands
of Sgt Watson, the Officers walked away
with their second trophy of the day. High
tea was served in the pavilion and spirits
of both messes where high as each
retired in preparation for the Waterloo
209 dinner night.
Waterloo dinner night was once again
a memorable event and celebrated with
good cheer throughout. The evening saw
much of the Regiment dispersed on Op
CABRIT and INTERFLEX which resulted
in a more intimate affair, however this
did not dampen the occasion. With
passionate readings, lively skits washed
down with good food and wine, the
dinner topped off another successful
Waterloo. To conclude the evening, bar
games were played and the true sporting
prowess of the WOs’ and Sgts’ mess was
put on display, with no obvious advan-
tages.
The annual Waterloo commemora-
tion is an important event in the QDG
calendar, allowing both messes to
remember those that came before in
fitting fashion.
