‘Jake’s mother always denied her son had any involvement with Robin’s death and turned against Emily and Elise,’ explained Alice. ‘Living in the village with so much gossip was distressing and unnecessary. The Coopers moved away, as did the other boys’ parents. We never saw them again.’
‘From what I’ve heard, he sounds horrible and if I met him, I’d give him a slap on the face and knock him to the ground,’ warned Sophie. ‘Mind you, his mother sounds just as rotten – the witch!’
‘Now you can see why I wanted Elise to know. At any time and in any place she could bump into him, or his mother,’ said Alice worriedly.
Cara sat up straight and said: ‘So, where do we go from here, Grandma?’
‘I’ve made a few notes,’ began Alice. ‘1. We don’t know where he lives. 2. Does he go to school? 3. We don’t know why they are here. 4. I have discovered his mother calls herself Marissa Collins. He might be known as Collins too. 5. I have found out – wait for it, girls – that she lives with a person by the name of Louisa Kilroy in the Bay Park Apartments.’
‘No way!’ shouted Cara, jumping for joy. ‘That’s incredible, Grandma. Are you sure?’
Alice nodded.
Cara and Olivia stared at each other. ‘See, I told you there was something peculiar about her,’ quipped Olivia. ‘And, she’s had it in for you for months.’
