‘Grandma,’ said Cara in the hallway. ‘Do you remember when Uncle Steve arrested me? Earlier, we’d talked about him visiting our school to let them know about Jake Cooper or rather, the boy. Do you know if he went?’
‘I’d forgotten all about it,’ replied Alice. ‘Is it important now?’
‘Not especially,’ grinned Cara. ‘But it would give Killjoy something to think about if she heard that a certain Jake Cooper was seen loitering outside the school.’

That night, Elise lay in bed thinking about the Coopers. I never expected to hear their name and don’t want to ever again. Even so, I’m glad Grandma told me the truth. I
know I was the youngest at Grandma’s today, but I’m nearly twelve and more than capable of confronting the Coopers at any time. Grandma didn’t need to worry; Cara and I would never tell on her. She turned over and fell fast asleep.

The following week, Elise was unusually quiet sitting next to Freddie in the back seat as Emily watched her from the rear-view mirror. She knew better than to question her so soon after collecting her from school. Cara had had a dental appointment earlier in the afternoon and had met
her mum in town.
