‘I’m going to the supermarket. Do you need anything, Elise?’ asked her mum, turning off the dual carriageway.
Her daughter shook her head and played with Freddie. She watched her mum walk between the cars to the entrance and shoppers parking or packing their car boots with bags. A woman, pulling a shopping trolley, walked in front of their car and was heading towards the main door. ‘Oh, no!’ Elise recognised her and climbed into the front seat for a closer look. ‘She’ll see Mum, I just know it. What do we do, Freddie?’
She dived into her school bag and grabbed her phone to call her Grandma. ‘Please answer, please.’
‘Hello,’ answered Alice.
‘Grandma, you have to do something. Mum is in Waitrose and I’ve just seen the Cooper woman go in. I don’t know what to do because I have to stay in the car with Freddie.’
‘All right, calm down. Do you think Mum is getting a lot of shopping or just bits and pieces?’
‘I don’t know. She didn’t say,’ cried Elise.
‘OK. Don’t worry. I’ll call her right now.’
Inside the store, Emily chose to use a self-checkout till.
She only had eight items and was about to scan the first one when her phone rang. ‘Hi, Mum. Can I ring you back, I’m scanning. Give me two minutes.’
Alice walked up and down her hallway praying for the phone to ring. Two minutes, three minutes, four and it rang.
‘What’s up, Mum?’ Emily asked. ‘Nothing. Where are you?’
