Alice kissed Elise and Freddie and carried him to the car. As Emily secured him in his seat she turned and laughed. ‘You’ll never guess, Mum. I had a scare in the store when I saw this woman at the meat counter, some distance from me. She was a dead ringer for Mel Cooper. I shuddered for a second and had to do a double take to make sure it wasn’t her.’
‘Gracious me. Whatever next?’ smiled Alice. ‘See you. Bye, Elise, bye Freddie.’
Alice waved goodbye and Elise held up her mobile as they drove away. Indoors, she read her text.
‘Mum wasn’t wearing her long-distance specs. It was her. I swear it. I will tell Dad when he comes home. Love you. E. x.’
Alice wasn’t sure what to think. Emily might not have thought it was Melanie Cooper, but what if Melanie had seen her? It was a possibility and it could happen again quite by chance. I expect to hear from Steve tonight. If I don’t tell them what I and the children know this will carry on for months. I’ll invite all the family for lunch on Sunday and do a buffet. I don’t care what they have planned – they must cancel, whatever it is.
