Kay Maitland sat in her car outside the school on Friday afternoon, waiting for Cara and Elise. She’d agreed to join her mum at her sister’s house for dinner.
Elise and Cara waved to her as they walked through the school gates. ‘You’ll never guess what happened this morning, Mum,’ said Cara as she sat in the car. ‘A rumour went around at school that the police came for Killjoy. Something bad must have happened because she drove out of the school gates at half past nine this morning. Amazingly, no one shouted, “good riddance,’’ although a girl from Year 10, wants her to go to prison.’
‘Whatever for?’ asked Kay.
‘Because she enjoys picking on certain students like she does Cara,’ threw in Elise.
‘Is that true? You’ve never mentioned it. Why does she pick on you?’
‘I had a run-in with her last year about wearing sparkly lip gloss, and then I told her that reading novels in lesson time was pointless. She doesn’t like constructive criticism – it’s her weakness – so some of the Year 9 students play on it. Don’t worry, Mum. I don’t care and I hope she doesn’t come back. Another week and she’s history as our form tutor. We’ll have Nutty next term and she’s cool.’
‘Nutty?’ quizzed Kay, pulling a face.
‘Oh, sorry, Mrs Hazelton,’ grinned Cara.
‘I see. If this ever happens again, promise me you’ll tell
us?’ urged Kay firmly.
‘I will, I promise.’ Changing the subject, Cara turned
around to speak to Elise. ‘I forgot to ask you earlier. Why aren’t you going to Cornwall for the holidays?’
