‘This is to whet our appetites before dinner,’ smiled Cara.
‘I wonder,’ began Alice, taking a roll. ‘Do I have time to take a bunch of flowers to a friend before dinner?’
‘Crikey, I should think so! It’s only ten past four, Mum,’ laughed Emily.
‘Good! Do you want to come for a ride, girls?’ queried Alice. ‘I’ll be back in an hour.’
Emily sighed. ‘Off you go. On the way back, Mum, can you pick up a carton of single cream, please?’
Back indoors, she placed the paprika beef casserole in the oven, watched by Kay and a smiling little boy bouncing up and down in his swing. Her mobile rang.
‘Hiya. It’s only me,’ said Steve. ‘I won’t be back in time for dinner. We’ve just had a call. Someone has gone missing from a residential home. We’re not sure whereabouts – details are coming in now. Sorry, love. See you soon.’
‘OK, see you later,’ she said, putting her phone down. ‘Kay, would you like a green salad or vegetables with the beef?’
‘Green salad, please,’ she replied. ‘Do you have any garlic bread?’
Emily chuckled. ‘You must make do with naan bread.’
Elise jumped at the chance to get out of taking Freddie for a stroll in his buggy. Giving him a hug, the pair hurried outside to Alice’s car. ‘Where are we going, Grandma,’ asked Cara as she made a dive for the front seat.’
‘We’re going to see a lady called Constance. She lives in a Bay Park apartment and is Marjorie’s friend.’
