‘Don’t know. Mum changed her mind. We’re staying in a log cabin in Wales, but I’ve forgotten whereabouts. My dad has promised to teach me how to climb and abseil.’
‘Wow!’ Can I come?’ cried Cara as Kay pulled up outside Elise’s house.
‘Hey! We’re going to Tenerife, or had you forgotten? You said you wanted to laze by a pool and do nothing,’ chided Kay.
The girls stepped out of the car and went through the back gate into the rear garden. Emily and Freddie sat with Alice under an apple tree. ‘Oh, no. Not another row,’ whispered Elise.
‘Hello, girls,’ smiled Alice. ‘Have you both had a good day?’
‘So, so, Grandma,’ said Elise, giving her grandma a kiss. ‘I’ll go upstairs to change.’
‘I’ll come with you,’ called Cara, leaving the adults alone.
‘Is Elise all right?’ Alice frowned as she made space for Kay on the bench seat.
‘Not since we had our spat,’ responded Emily. ‘She blames me for upsetting you and forcing you to leave the country. Elise is not a forgiving child.’
‘A chip off the old block, dare I say?’ Kay teased.
Emily scowled at her sister and then smiled: ‘Fair point.’
Elise and Cara returned, carrying glasses of fruit juice and mini chocolate rolls. From Emily’s laughter and their grandma’s smile, it was apparent the pair had made up.
