‘Yes! It’s the same at weekends. Can you imagine the outcry if they had to bring their work home? I can just picture my mum. Flying around the house with a phone glued to her ear, arranging patients’ appointments, bagging urine samples and receiving calls from irate patients who have no tablets for the next day. When she walks out of the surgery door and closes it behind her, the job ends until the next day.’
Olivia lay down on Cara’s bed and started giggling. ‘We do enjoy a good moan, don’t we?’
‘According to my grandma, it’s better than bottling it up. Say what you mean and get it over and done with.’
‘Cara! Olivia’s mum is here. Are you coming down?’ called Kay.
Downstairs, the two mums were chatting as the girls walked into the kitchen. ‘What’s going on?’ asked Cara.
‘I have a favour to ask,’ sighed Kay. ‘You know that Elise has been invited to spend tomorrow at Gemma’s house. Well, Uncle Steve has just called to ask if you’d like to go with her and make a day of it.’
‘Wow, a whole day at the beach!’ smiled Olivia. ‘What do you say, Cara?’
‘That will work out just right and you’ll still have plenty of time to get ready for your Easter party at night, Olivia.’
‘Good, all sorted,’ smiled Mrs Parker. ‘Come on, Olivia – it will take the rest of the evening for you to decide what to wear. Cheerio, Kay.’
