‘Don’t jump to conclusions before we have solid information about his identity. That’s what we’ll do, otherwise you’ll be a nervous wreck.’
Kay smiled and nodded. ‘I’m beginning to sound similar to my sister, aren’t I?’
‘Sorry, I didn’t mean it. Emily doesn’t have the ability to cope with anything related to Nestonbrook. Keeping her in the dark is a necessity at the moment.’
‘I agree! OK! Let’s take a look at the dual carriageway. We have an ordnance town map over there,’ she said, pointing to a shelf beside Pete. ‘Show me the gantries.’
Together, they went over to the table and spread the map out. Pete tapped an area with his finger. ‘There’s one gantry positioned there and another here – let me think – the camera points to traffic heading west off the motorway. So, yes. This is about where he crossed.’
Kay stared at the map and the surrounding land. ‘Why did he go in that direction? There’s nothing there. Well, no properties, except for the old caves, if they haven’t collapsed.’
‘They disappeared in the eighties when the dual carriageway was built,’ Pete replied dismissively. ‘And don’t forget, the land gets waterlogged from rainwater off the road.’ He pondered over the map and sighed. ‘But which direction did he come from before he reached the carriageway?’
The couple continued to read the map and tried to figure out a quick and easy route avoiding busy roads, thoroughfares, and more importantly, live cameras. Pete
