sighed. ‘When Cara goes with Elise to Gemma’s house, I suggest we don our walking boots and walk from the town to the carriageway camera. We need some exercise and who knows, we might see him.’

Elise rose early on Easter Saturday morning, long before her parents and before Freddie cried for his breakfast. She’d packed her rucksack last night and crept downstairs for some breakfast. Taking a bowl of cereal and a glass of juice into the dining room she sat on the window seat to eat. Staring at the boats bobbing on the water seemed a world away from Foxglove Cottage where she and her
brother, Robin grew up.
The cottage was a wonderful and happy home until he
died. Nowadays, remembering his infectious laugh, words of wisdom, and constant bouts of teasing brought a smile to her face. Elise missed him, but after these quiet reflective moments she didn’t feel sad. Instead, she felt invigorated, alive, and bursting with energy – ready to go.
It was no surprise to her dad, Steve, to see her up and sitting in her favourite seat. He came through with a cup of coffee and sat beside her.
‘Am I disturbing you?’
‘No, silly. I was just thinking about Foxglove Cottage and how lucky I am to be living by the sea. Will we always live here, Dad?’
‘I jolly well hope so. We have no intention of leaving; it’s our forever holiday home.’
