Pete reversed in the driveway and headed towards the bypass. ‘Whereabouts does Olivia live?’ he asked for a second time. Kay tut-tutted at his forgetfulness.
‘Turn right at the Wheatsheaf pub, second left and first right into Beamer Avenue,’ cried Cara. ‘They live at the end.’
Pete obeyed and jumped when Cara shouted in his ear: ‘There’s Olivia – she’s waiting for us.’
The three girls, squashed in the back seat, didn’t stop talking until they arrived at Gemma’s house. It was a first for Kay and only then did she realise Cara was right. It was small.
Ensuring they had everything, Kay and Pete waved goodbye, thanked Gemma’s mum and handed over a bag of goodies for the girls to share. The couple drove to the harbour and parked on the seafront. Behind them lay the town centre, where they planned to begin their walk. Skirting the main shopping centre, they set off and meandered past historic navel buildings and new office blocks. Their journey took them through narrow streets, mews, and pocket parks, as they headed towards the dual carriageway. When it came into view, Pete had to decide which way to go – left or right along Quay Road.
‘Stop a minute. Let’s get our bearings,’ said Kay. Fortunately, Pete had remembered to bring his binoculars and squinted as he set the lens.
‘I can see the camera perched on top of the gantry that filmed the boy, but I don’t know its range. If we head left it should bring us out close to Heath Road and the
