underpass ‒ towards the old engineering factory,’ he said. ‘I’m puzzled: that road doesn’t lead to anywhere.’
‘It’s about time it was demolished. What are you thinking?’ asked Kay.
‘Well, Heath Road is a quarter of its original length. The old Heath Road stretched from Quay Road to what is now Bay Park. A long section closed after they built the posh apartments, leaving a narrow track to the engineering factory. Nowadays, residents can either take the bus or drive along Bay Park Road into town. Using Heath Road, the underpass, and the pocket park is a short cut,’ said Pete and jokingly added: ‘The quickest route is to swim across the bay and risk being drowned.’
He looked around for a moment and then said: ‘I think we should return to the car and go back around the one- way system, turn right at the yacht club and drive southwards. Heath Road is first left.
They set off at a fast pace until Kay stopped to catch her breath. ‘Why are we hurrying ... can’t we stop for a bite to eat?’
‘Sorry, love. That’s a good idea. What about over there, at the Jolly Sailor? We haven’t set foot in the place for years.’
The pub had changed for the better and they found a table by a window with a view over the pocket park. Having enjoyed a light lunch and a chocolate dessert, they left and headed back to the harbour.
Leaning against the car, Kay kicked off her boots. ‘I can’t understand why the boy crossed the dual
