‘Hi, Cara. How are you getting on? Us? We’ve just had a lovely lunch in the Jolly Sailor and now we’re heading back home. Are you both all right? Wonderful! What time do you want picking up? OK, see you later.’ Kay snapped her phone shut. ‘She wants you to collect them at five.’
Pete stared ahead with both arms resting on the steering wheel. His cheerful mood had switched to sombre and a more serious Pete was emerging.
‘Well, there’s the track to our right. I can’t see why anyone would want to walk through the mud, past this dump just to get to the town when there is a bus service up there in Bay Road.’ He started the car and did a three-point turn. ‘I’d better call Steve when we get home. From now on he can deal with this. Surely it’s only a matter of time before the boy is found.’
